Game Recap

Game Recap

The Eagles faced off with their crosstown rival, the Warner Robins Demons, looking to avenge last year’s heartbreaking 21-20 defeat in the annual ‘War Town Classic’. The Demons entered the game with a deceptive 0-4 record and came out inspired in the first half looking to turn their season around.

The first quarter was a battle of field position as both defenses’ flexed their muscle. In the second quarter, the Demons broke the scoreless deadlock with a 7 play / 72 yard drive ending in a 5 yard touchdown run at the 9:27 mark. The PAT gave the Demons a 7-0 lead and revved up their crowd. WRHS forced another Eagle punt but the Northside defense returned the favor and the Eagle’s dangerous return Steven Nelson returned the punt 37 yards to the Demon 15 yard line. Three plays later, Briar Van Brunt scored on an option keeper from 3 yards out. Dillon Mixon’s PAT tied the game at 7 with 4:11 left before halftime. Neither team could sustain another drive in the last 4 minutes, and the teams entered the locker room at halftime still tied at seven apiece.

The Eagles came out of the locker room determined to take control of the game, and they wasted no time in establishing their dominance. After a 34 yard kickoff return by Nelson, the Eagles set up on their own 42 yard line. On the second play from scrimmage, Stephon Cross took an inside handoff and broke free toward the Demon sideline and sprinted 55 yards for a touchdown to give Northside their first lead of the game. Mixon’s PAT made the score 14-7 just 30 seconds into the third quarter. However neither team could muster another score in the quarter even though the Eagles had begun to take control of the game on both sides of the ball.

Early in the fourth quarter, Van Brunt connected with Cartrell Brooks on a perfectly executed fade route for an apparent touchdown, but a holding penalty wiped out the score and forced to try a long 46 yare FG which sailed wide left leaving the score at 14-7 at the 10:17 of final period. The Eagle defense led by a Joe Sturn interception gave the offense another crack at it and this time, the Eagles would not be denied. Van Brunt pumped faked on a short route and then let loose a long pass down the sideline to a wide open Miguel Williams for a 40 yard touchdown pass. The Mixon PAT made the score 21-7 with 8:24 left in the fourth quarter. The Eagle defense again forced another Demon punt and the Eagles put the game away with a 2 yard touchdown run by Shaquille O’Neill and a Mixon PAT with 5:15 left in the game. Eagle reserves held the Demons after a couple of first downs and turned the ball back over to the offense on downs. The Eagles then ran out the clock with a couple of runs and the final ‘victory formation’ kneel down to end the game with a 28-7 victory and to give Coach Kevin Kinsler a win in his first game against the Demons as the head coach.

The Eagles are now 5-0 (2-0 in Region 1-AAAA) and hit the road again next week when they travel down I-75 to take on Lee County in another important region contest.
