Game Recap
The Northside Eagles posted their 28th consecutive win Friday night when they defeated the Rome Wolves by a score of 30-0 in the quarterfinal round of the AAAA state playoffs. Senior Tijuan Green led the Eagle offensive attack with 209 yards on 28 carries and 2 touchdowns in route to becoming Northside’s all-time leading rusher. Tijuan now has 3462 career rushing yards on 444 carries (7.80 avg.) and his career TD total of 50 is now only two shy of the record.
The Eagles set the tone for the night in the first quarter when they set off on a methodical 16-play / 80 yard drive that saw them have to overcome several penalties to continue the drive. Green ended the drive with a 1 yard TD plunge and Northside led 7-0 after Devon Pike’s PAT. With 9:56 left in the second quarter, junior QB Joe Scott connected with senior Nick Bass on a beautiful 66 yard touchdown pass. Pike’s PAT made the score 14-0 at halftime.
Scott and Bass hooked up again in the third quarter, this time from 29 yards out to push the score to 21-0 after Pike’s PAT. The Eagle defense continued its stellar playoff play against the Rome wing-T offense. After forcing Rome into another punting situation, the defense added to the scoreboard when the punt snap sailed over the head of the punter and he was chased out of the endzone for a safety and a 23-0 lead with 1:47 left in the 3rd quarter. In the fourth quarter, Green ripped off a 54 yard run deep into Rome territory to set up his final 1 yard TD run. Devon Pike’s PAT made the final score 30-0.
The Northside defense posted its third consecutive playoff shutout and now has posted 18 straight quarters without giving up an offensive score. The Eagles now prepare for their third straight GA Dome appearance where they will meet the undefeated Tucker Tigers.
