Game Recap

A special thanks to Marty Sheppard for providing this recap!
The Eagles traveled north to Henry Co. to face the Eagles Landing War Eagles on Halloween night and came away with a business-like and efficient 47-7 region win to go 7-0 in 2-AAAAA and 8-0 overall. After the first of 4 consecutive "3 & Outs" to start the game for Eagles Landing, Northside took over at the War Eagle 36 yard line and promptly went on a 4 play drive that ended with a Ferlando Williams to Spencer Hill 9-yard TD pass. Sean Mayo added the PAT and the Eagles led 7-0 with 8:59 left in the first quarter. Three more "3 & Outs" forced by the Eagle defense led to three more quick touchdown drives of 28, 53, & 47 yards. Senior running back Rodrick Hayward finished each of these drives with 3 rushing TDs (1, 17, & 40 yards). Sean Mayo tacked on 3 more PATs and the Eagles led 28-0 with 9:50 left in the second quarter. The War Eagles fumbled on their next possession and Ferlando Williams ended another quick 3 play, 47-yard drive with a 15-yard run and Mayo added his fifth consecutive PAT of the night to put the Eagles up 35-0 with 7:29 left before halftime. Eagles Landing picked up their first 1st down of the game on the first play following the kickoff, but three plays later punted the ball back to the Eagles with about 5 minutes remaining in the second quarter. Several second unit offensive players including sophomore quarterback Justin Rios entered the game at this point for the Eagles. Junior Michael Tye broke off a 32-yard run to put the Eagles in scoring position again at the Eagles Landing 4-yard line, but the War Eagle defense stiffened and Northside's Steven Johnson just missed a 25-yard field goal attempt to send the teams to the locker room for halftime with the Eagles leading 35-0.

The GHSA's new "Mercy" rule took effect to begin the third quarter. The Eagles' offensive starters returned for their one and only second half possession to begin the third quarter, and this time took nearly six minutes off of the 'mercy-running clock'. Ferlando Williams scored his second rushing touchdown of the night with a 2-yard run at the 6:18 mark. The PAT was blocked and the Eagles now lead 41-0. The Eagles lost their bid for a shutout when Eagles Landings' Drew Glenn scored on a 1-yard run with 2:59 left in a very fast second half. Evan Kay's PAT made the score 41-7 late in the fourth quarter. The Eagles' last possession of the game consisted of 4 simple running plays that turned into the final scoring drive (54 yards) of the night culminated by Michael Tye's 3-yard touchdown run. The PAT was no good and the game ended with the ensuing kickoff with the Eagles on top 47-7.

Rodrick Hayward led the Eagles' rushing attack with 17 carries for 149 yards and 3 touchdowns. Backup Michael Tye added 127 yards and a touchdown on only11 carries. Ferlando Williams was 6 out of 8 passing on the night for 79 yards and a touchdown. Spencer Hill was on the receiving end of that TD pass as well as 4 other passes on the night for a total of 57 receiving yards. With the win, the Eagles return home still undefeated and on top of the region standings with Homecoming coming up next week with Henry Co.
