Game Recap

Game Recap

Somehow the Eagles escaped this battle with a victory over the Mt. Zion Bulldogs. In a huge region game, the offense sputtered and forced the defense to stay on the field for long periods of time and often. The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff and Albert Howard recovered an early fumble. The offense could not get the necessary 10 yards for a first down and punted the ball back to Mt. Zion. The defense held steady and forced a punt by the Bulldogs, but a roughing the kicker penalty would give them a first down and maintain possession. The defense again stiffened and stopped a 4th down play to turn the ball back over to the offense. This would end the first quarter in a scoreless game.
The 2nd quarter started with the offense running 3 plays and punting back to Mt. Zion. The defense would again stop the Bulldogs on 4th down to give the offense another chance. This time the offense took advantage of the situation as Brandon White scampered 60 yards to set up a first and goal at the 2 yard line. Ferlando Williams scored on the next play. Sean Mayo kicked the extra point to put the Eagles up 7-0 at the 6:58 mark of the 2nd period. After receiving the kickoff, Mt. Zion fumbled the ball on the 2nd play as Adrian Toliver recovered for Northside. Unfortunately, the Eagles fumbled the ball back to Mt. Zion on their first play. The Bulldogs would march down the field and score a TD with 2:02 remaining in the half on a 8 yard pass. The extra point attempt was no good and the Eagles maintained a slim 7-6 lead. The offense then turned the ball over on an interception to give the Bulldogs one more chance before the half. The half ended however with the Eagles leading 7-6.
The third quarter would consist of each team punting the ball as neither team's offense could move on the respective defenses. The fourth quarter would be full of excitement. Mt. Zion punted to Northside and the Eagles scored their 2nd touchdown as Ferlando Williams connected with D'Anthony Harris on a 27 yard strike. Mayo added the point after to put the Eagles up 14-6 with 10:52 remaining in the game. Mt. Zion was forced to punt again on their next possession, but the punt was fumbled right back to the Bulldogs. Mt. Zion marched down the field and got into the end zone on a running play as the defense gave up the first rushing TD of the year. The Bulldogs attempted a 2 point conversion and were successful. The game was now tied 14-All with 5:52 remaining. The Eagles took over at the 38 yard line and made a beautiful-time consuming drive down to the 2 yard line with only 11 seconds remaining. After Mt. Zion used all 3 of their timeouts, Sean Mayo calmly kicked the winning 19 yard field goal as the Northside fans were delirious!
While the team didn't look real good at times, they found a way to defeat a tough Mt. Zion Bulldog team on the road to remain undefeated after the 6th game of the season.
