Game Recap

The Eagles started out the 2003 season with a lot of new faces on the field. Game 1 of the new season would find the young Eagles in Ft. Valley taking on the Peach Co. Trojans. With the threat of rain in the air, the game would start with dry conditions with the Trojans winning the coin toss and electing to defer to the 2nd half allowing the boys from Northside to receive the opening kickoff. The first two plays from scrimmage would result in 1st downs as the running game started out with powerful runs. After getting four 1st downs, the Eagles were faced with a 3rd down play and elected to pass. The pass from senior quarterback Ferlando Williams was intercepted by Peach Co. defender Damion Brown and he raced 70 yards untouched for the first score of the season. The extra point attempt was made by Brett Mathis to put the Trojans up by the score of 7-0.
Northside's next possession also resulted in a Damion Brown interception. The Eagles defense would take the field for the first time and hold the Trojans offense.
The 2nd quarter consisted of a powerful drive by the Eagles as they tried to even the score. On a 3rd and 2 play, senior Rodrick Hayward burst through the middle at the 15 yard line and scampered toward the end zone. He would however fumble the ball at the 2 yard line and Peach Co recovered in the end zone to halt the attempted scoring drive. The 1st half would end with the Trojans leading 7-0.
In the 3rd quarter, the Trojans came out on offense and drove down the field and settled for a 27 yard field goal by Brett Mathis to put the Trojans up by the score of 10-0. Northside countered with a 27 yard field goal by Sean Mayo to get the Eagles within 1 score at 10-3.
The 4th quarter would be very exciting as the Eagles marched downfield for a 75 yard, 15 play touchdown drive. Ferlando Williams scored on a 3 yard run to get the Eagles within 1 point with only 1:04 remaining on the clock. After a timeout and discussion on what to do, the Eagles attempted a 2 point conversion to try to attain the lead. Ferlando Williams did convert on a daring run and the Eagles of Northside would lead on the scoreboard for the first time in the contest. With less than a minute to play, the Eagles kicked off to the Trojans. Peach Co senior quarterback A.J. Bryant tried valiantly to pass downfield and gain a victory for his team. After getting a first down, Bryant tried a long pass downfield with the Eagles in a "prevent" defense with 9.8 seconds remaining and connected to get the Trojans inside the 5 yard line. Timeouts would be a very important factor in this contest as the Trojans were without any timeouts to stop the clock. In an outcome reminiscent of last year's Houston Co game, the Trojans could not get a snap off in the 2.3 seconds left as the Eagles were victorious in their first game of the season, winning by the score of 11-10.
